Baked Chana Masala Burgers

All the flavors of a classic chana masala in the form of a portable burger and is not as spicy!

Chana masala is a very popular curry from the northern part of India made with garbanzo beans and is traditionally served with flat breads such as rotis/puris/parathas/naans. Garbanzo beans are soaked overnight, pressure cooked and then made into a curry with onions, tomatoes and many spices. A lengthy process indeed! Canned garbanzo beans is such a great time saving substitute.

The chana patty is a tweak to my Baked Beet Falafels recipe. Though carrots are not traditional in chana masala, it’s addition made the chana patty more tastier, held together well baking and bumps up the nutritional value of the burger.The patty comes together super easy in a food processor. Shape and bake. Voila! Patties will be very soft when hot and will firm up when cool. So, do not try to disturb them as soon as you take it out of the oven.

Process carrot chunks….

Add remaining ingredients….

Shape into 3 patties….

Bake at 450 degrees for 30 minutes…..

Stir all sauce ingredients together and serve burgers with onion slices and tomatoes.

Please do not skimp on the sauce!! 

The burgers are very mildly spiced! Sneak a few jalapeno slices along with the onions and tomatoes, if you want to amp up the heat!

Baked Chana Masala Burgers

Ingredients:

Chana Patty

1 medium carrot, peeled and chopped into chunks

1 x 15-ounce can garbanzo beans, drained, rinsed and patted dry

1/2 cup chopped onion

2 garlic cloves

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup bread crumbs

2 tablespoons all purpose flour

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Masala sauce

1/4 cup plain yogurt

2 tablespoons ketchup

1 tablespoon mayonnaise

2 tablespoons minced cilantro

1/4 teaspoon garam masala powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

Additional ingredients

3 potato buns or hamburger buns

thinly sliced onions

thinly sliced tomatoes

Preperation: 

To make chana patty,

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Grease a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.

Add carrot chunks into a food processor, process for few seconds, until coarsely ground.

Add all the remaining ingredients and process for about 15 seconds, until it starts to gather together.

Dump mixture onto a plate, mix to combine well, divide into 3 equal portions and shape each into a 3 1/4 inch diameter patty. Place on the prepared baking sheet, spray the tops with non-stick cooking spray and bake for 30 minutes.

Place pan on a wire rack to cool (patty will firm up as it cools).

To make masala sauce,

Stir all ingredients together.

To assemble burgers,

Spread some masala sauce (be generous with sauce) on the bottom half of a bun, place a chana patty, onion slice and tomato slice on top and then close with top bun. Serve immediately.

Makes 3 burgers
